Description

This chromogenic substrate for cellulase activity can be used in biofuels research.

Cellulases include any of several enzymes produced by fungi, bacteria, and protozoans that catalyze the decomposition of cellulose and related polysaccharides. Cellulases specifically hydrolyze the 1,4-beta-D-glycosidic linkages in cellulose, hemicellulose, lichenin, and cereal beta-D-glucans. Cellulases break down the cellulose molecule into simpler sugars including monosaccharides such as beta-glucose, or shorter polysaccharides and oligosaccharides. This substrate has been found to be especially useful for biofuels research where measuring cellulase activity is important for optimum ethanol production.
