Chromogenic substrate for lactosidase activity. The released product, 2-chloro-4-nitrophenol (CNP) is easily monitored spectrophotometrically at 405 nm.

This highly sensitive lactosidase probe releases the product 2-chloro-4-nitrophenol (CNP) that can be monitored spectrophotometrically at 405 nm, and produces a distinctive yellow color. The rate of formation of 2-chloro-4-nitrophenol is directly proportional to the lactosidase activity in the sample. The pKa of CNP is approximately 5.5.
