Boron-dipyrromethene dye.

Boron-dipyrromethene dyes (trade name BODIPY®) are composed of a dipyrrole structure containing a complexed boron difluoride. These fluorophores are characterized by a low molecular weight and small Stokes shift, but with high quantum yields, sharp emission spectra and low photobleaching attributes that make them useful in a variety of biological analysis techniques. Their fluorescence is also predominantly environment-insensitive in a variety of different solvents or in different polarity situations in cells or tissues (e.g. in the lipid bilayer, cytosol, etc.). This dye has fluorescence excitation and emission properties (EX 503 nm; EM 512 nm) that are very similar to fluorescein and as such can be used with many current instrumentation systems.
