Fluorescent substrate for β-lactosidase or combined galactosidase and glucosidase activities; releases 4-methylumbelliferone (EX 385 nm, EM 502 nm, e = 16K) upon enzyme action.

This fluorogenic lactosidase probe releases the bright blue fluorophore 4-methylumbelliferone (4-MU) in direct correlation to the β-lactosidase enzyme activity contained in the sample. The fluorescence is optimal at pH values above 8-9 and therefore development of the optimal fluorescence by addition of a basic buffer (stop buffer) is usually performed to both stop the enzyme reaction and develop the fluorescence.
