Marker Gene Technologies, Inc.
Marker Gene Technologies, Inc. has developed
platform technologies that utilize transferred genes matched with new synthetic
drug-analogs to alter the growth and biological characteristics of living cells
in specific tissues of living organisms. These systems allow for the selective
release of therapeutic drugs under the control of genetic processes within the
cell. This proprietary system has shown
promise in such varied applications as human gene therapy, plant biotechnology
and industrial production of recombinant proteins.
Marker Gene Technologies’ primary focus is to use
its proprietary Gene Therapy/Pro-Drug Delivery System to replace existing
pharmaceutical protocols for the treatment of specific genetic diseases (cancer,
cystic fibrosis, neurodegenerative diseases), especially those for which there
are few proven alternative treatment regimens.
The advantages of the MGT techniques are their ability to deliver high
levels of drugs with reduced toxicity or side effects along with the capacity
to administer a wider variety of drugs to a specific tissue or organ, using
genetically controlled release.
While there is relatively broad competition in the
area of cancer therapeutics, where the MGT technology has application, there
are virtually no other competitors in this specialized industry niche. Marker Gene’s core technology is an enabling
gene-based delivery system that addresses a variety of medical, agricultural
and bio-industrial applications. Among
the drugs currently under development are analogs of common chemotherapeutic
agents, neuro-generative agents, vascularization- inhibition agents,
immune-regulation agents, antibiotics, and herbicides. Allied programs in cancer diagnosis,
apoptosis induction in cancer, cancer genomics and pharmacogenomics are
underway.
MGT’s pioneering work in cancer therapeutics has
been funded both privately, and through grants from the National Institutes of
Health, The National Cancer Institute, The National Institute of General Medical
Sciences, and The National Science Foundation.
