Description: Iodinated and chlorinated derivative of fluorescein. Since it does not easily cross live cell membranes, it has been used to stain dead or degenerated epithelial cells of the cornea and conjunctiva (including nuclei and cell walls) producing a red color.
Application: Rose bengal has also been used as a generator of singlet oxygen in cell assays. The di-acetate derivative M0780 is a cell permeant version of this important biological stain.
