CAS Number: 3520-43-2
Description: This widely used carbocyanine dye is useful as a ratiometric indicator of mitochondrial potential in cells, tissues, and isolated mitochondria.
Application: Upon mitochondrial depolarization JC-1 exhibits a potential-sensitive color shift from red to green, due to concentration-dependent monomerization of red fluorescent J-aggregates. It has been used to detect the collapse of mitochondrial membrane potential in functional assays of multiple drug resistance and in apoptosis-related mitochondrial membrane potential measurements.
