Bromoxynil derivative which can be used to selectively ablate GUS-positive cells and tissues in plant systems. The methyl ester helps with cell permeation in vivo.

Bromoxynil is a nitrile herbicide that is used for post-emergent control of annual broadleaf weeds. It is especially effective in the control of weeds in cereal, corn, sorghum, onions, flax and mint. The compound works by inhibiting photosynthesis in the target plants. This beta-glucuronide derivative lacks activity until acted upon by intracellular beta-glucuronidase (cloned with the GUS marker gene), and can therefore be used to negatively select for recombinant plants in the presence of wild type species.
