Galactoside derivative of myo-inositol will release myo-inositol upon action of β-galactosidase.

myo-Inositol is a component of membrane phospholipids, glycophosphatidylinositol anchors which bind glycoproteins to cell membranes, and a precursor of inositol phosphates which act as second messengers in vivo. This galactoside derivative can be used as a tissue culture media component that is selectively released in lacZ transfected cell lines.
